Presenting courses:

Course 1 : Foundation
$2,000.00

Level I

Application Deadline, September 7 / Begins Sunday, September 20, 2026

A semi-private, intensive, accelerated orientation for artists focused on participating in the New York City art ecosystem whether you are an NYC resident or live elsewhere.

What are the realities of establishing a career as an artist in New York City and how does one remain focused and inspired while adjusting to changing social and professional conditions? To approach these questions we will not only look to what is happening now, but to the evolving modern art systems that got us here.

Alongside historical and practical fundamentals, we will examine specifically New York’s art ecosystem and its often unspoken rules and protocols.

Topics include

  • establishing visibility through a social presence

  • navigating galleries and exhibitions

  • self-curating and self-mythologizing

  • finding your supportive people

  • collaborative DIY spaces

  • securing the right studio for your needs and the NYC loft law

  • pricing artwork appropriately

  • using social media and the web strategically, and for sales

We’ll also discuss developing sound financial and administrative practices like invoicing and getting paid; pursuing press; the effective difference between commercial, nonprofit and artist-run spaces; maintaining balance through part-time work while sustaining a serious studio practice; applying for grants and residencies including representing your work and yourself through writing.

Additionally, we will address day to day studio skills like photographing, logging, storing, consigning, packing, and transporting art.

Course 2: Flourish
$2,000.00

Level II

Application Deadline, October 4 / Begins Sunday, October 19, 2026

This is a semi-private, intensive, accelerated course for artists already established, who have studio business underway. Like Course 1 it is focused on participating in the New York City art ecosystem.

Artistic success can take many forms; we will examine this fact through case studies and candid discussions of real working art lives.

Indeed, when has one transitioned from emerging to mid-career and what does that imply? This course focuses on building the infrastructure necessary to sustain a long-term artistic career.

We’ll look at best practices for maintaining relationships and contracts with multiple dealers, advisors, and collectors.

The importance of building a robust studio infrastructure, includes:

  • comprehensive archiving

  • database management

  • tracking works past and present

  • exploring AI as an informed assistant

  • working with multiple galleries’ “inventories”

  • contracts written by art lawyers

  • managing gallery inventory vs. studio inventory

  • knowing when to say no to certain shows, PR, charities

  • best practices for selling from your studio

Additional topics include sustaining a long term artistic life outside of the conventional nine to five economy through discussions of pricing, payment, taxes, investing, insurance, law, and real estate.

Participants will learn to build greater stability while preserving the independence that defines a professional artistic practice.
